The double-action model 85 originates from 1980. This is a 5-shot revolver in .38 Special caliber. Taurus then supplied this weapon with 51 or 76 mm ( 2 or 3 in) barrel. In 1993, a stainless steel version was added to the range. This model 85 has a fixed rear sight. The cylinder locking is at the tip of the ejector bar and at the recoil shield at the back. This weapon also has transfer bar safety. The total length of this older model is 161.5 mm (6 ½ in) and it weighs 567 g (20 oz). This revolver originally had a rubber grip, but since 1996, Taurus has given this weapon an Uncle Mike's Boot grip. Taurus launched the model 85UL Ultra Light in 1997. This new type has an alloy frame, a steel barrel and blued steel or blank stainless steel barrel shroud. The weight of the 85UL is 482g (17 oz). This is 85g lighter then the steel version. Since 1999, Taurus has also manufactured the Model 85 revolver in a titanium version. This Total Titanium version has a titanium frame, cylinder and barrel. This weapon is available in a variety of colors, such as a blue gloss, mat blue, mat gold, light and dark grey. The barrels have a built-in compensator with three gas outlets on both sides of the front sight. The weight of the titanium model is 437g (15 ½ oz), and this weapon is suitable for .38 Special P ammunition. In 1999, Taurus also released their blued and stainless steel versions in double- action-only. In the year 2000, they introduced yet a new version, the 85 Police Ultra Light Titanium. This revolver also has a double-action-only trigger action and a barrel with a built-in compensator. This weapon has a titanium barrel and cylinder, and only weighs 369g (13 oz), but is still suitable for P cartridges in .38 Special caliber.
